| The
first African American woman to serve in the Delaware State Senate, Margaret
Rose Henry was elected to finish the term of Herman Holloway, Sr. in 1994.
Senator Henry has been re-elected twice since to serve the 2nd Senatorial
district. Senator Henry moved to Delaware in 1970 after earning her degree from Texas
Southern University. She holds a master's degree in community development and
leadership from Springfield College.
Senator
Henry has been active in the Delaware human service community for thirty years.
She started her professional career at the YWCA, has worked for United Way of
Delaware, was executive director of Delaware Guidance Services, served as
administrator of the Ingleside Retirement Apartments for senior citizens, and as executive director of Girls Incorporated
of Delaware. Currently, Senator Henry is Program Coordinator of the
Women's Center at Delaware Technical and Community College in Wilmington.
The
Women's Center at Delaware Tech is committed to providing an environment that
will support the academic, professional, emotional, and social development of
all women students on campus. The office is a source of student assistance and
offers information, workshops, support groups, and referrals. In addition, the
Women's Center promotes a greater awareness of gender issues throughout the
College, while creating opportunities for campus involvement. The Women's Center
operates as a central meeting place, information resource, program center, and
support for the Delaware Technical & Community College student population.
Senator Henry's volunteer activities are very extensive. She is
currently the State Director for Women in Government, serves on the Board of the
Medical Center of Delaware, and is a sustainer in the Junior League of
Wilmington. Other activities have included: The Governor's
Commission on Families; Chair of the City of Wilmington's Civil Rights
Commission; Member of the Board of Interfaith Housing Delaware; and member of
the Board of Trustees for the National Society of Fundraising Executives. In
addition, Senator Henry serves as Honorary Chair of Delawareans United to
Prevent Child Abuse.
Margaret Rose Henry has been honored by the Delaware YWCA as a "Woman of
the Century." She is also the recipient of the Delaware Chapter of the
ACLU's "Gerald E. Kandler Memorial Award" for her exemplary life as a
public servant and as an advocate for the rights of citizens throughout the
community. Senator Henry has been honored by the Delaware
Bar Association as their Legislator of the Year in 2002. Most recently,
Senator Henry was inducted into the Delaware Women's Hall of Fame.
She is most proud that as a divorced mother, she was able to raise two sons,
John and Marcus, who are both successful in their own right. She is the
proud grandmother of Myles Isaha Henry, who refers to her as "Mimi".
